Hello Everyone,
April 27th is the annual Take our Daughters and Sons to
Work Day. Whether you can celebrate this day by taking your child
to work with you or not, it is still a time to reconsider our
relationships with our children. I look at that issue in an
article below.
I hope all of you had a wonderful holiday and have survived
this very stressful time of the year – Tax Season!!!

For the Sake of Our Children |
“The reality is that obesity is a very
complex problem. There are many underpinnings. People accept
that height is genetically determined, but they are less willing
to accept that a person’s weight depends on genetic makeup.”
Allen Spiegel, MD, Director
National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases
National Institutes of Health
This quote is so meaningful for
me. How many times have we noticed someone with beautiful blue
eyes and recognized that a parent had those same beautiful blue
eyes. Why is it that we expect people to have more control over
their size that is genetically influenced than we do their eye
color? We contribute height, hair color, the shape of a face to
our children, and we also contribute size. But there are ways
that we can work with our children so they do not follow an
unhealthy path with their weight.
Rather than harp, criticize and
nag, we need to lead by example and encourage our children when
they do make positive strides.
A study done at Arizona State
University revealed several important practical measures that
will help us help our children. They include the following
- Be sure that your
child eats breakfast. This is the most important meal for
weight control because it jumps starts metabolism early in the
day.
- The more sedentary
your child is, the more likely they are to be overweight. But
it is not necessary for children to play football or soccer.
Just being involved in activities that are non-athletic such
as school clubs, marching band, part-time jobs, volunteer
work, church activities or household chores causes them to be
less likely to become overweight.
- Eat healthy at
home. Even though you may be the family member who had
surgery, the healthy habits that you are learning can set an
example for your children. They may complain at first, but
there is no one in their lives who has more influence than
you.
- The study also
revealed that high self-esteem has a positive influence on
body weight. Find ways to praise your children every chance
that you get.
Finally be a role model for your children. When your children
see that you are successful with your weight, it inspires them.
Your decision to have surgery is truly a decision that will
impact not only you, but your children as well. |

The telephone seminar on emotional eating with Dr. Denise
Lamothe was fabulous and the CD’s are now for sale. Here are
some comments from our attendees: “This teleseminar was
invaluable! It was the best hour I've ever spent in any
seminar. Dr. Denise presented ideas I've never heard mentioned
before. This talk was just packed with information and
inspiration. It touched me so much emotionally that I went
through several Kleenexes! Thanks for this wealth of
information!”
- April
from Oregon
“I thought the teleseminar was AWESOME!!”
-
Linda from PA
“I am a compulsive
emotional eater. I eat and then feel totally guilty about it so
I eat more to make myself feel better,
then I feel that much more guilty so I eat again and the circle
just continues. Dr. Denise’s book and the wonderful
teleseminar have truly helped me realize that I'm not a failure
and there is hope that I can break this awful habit.”
“After my surgery,
I gained back eight pounds. With Barbara's Back on Track Program
http://www.BackOnTrackWithBarbara.com I have re-lost the
eight pounds and more. And with what I learned from Dr. Denise I
feel that I will be able to successfully keep the weight off
and be proud of myself instead of constantly worrying about
failure. Thanks to Barbara and Dr. Denise."
- JoAnne from Maryland
“I have been out of the loop for quite awhile so it was
really good for me to hear others going through what I am going
through and that I am really not a failure after all. Thank you
for drawing me back in!”
- Pricilla
from New York
“Dr. Denise speaks from the heart. By using her own personal
experiences, it made the talk more personal and real. It was
definitely worth my time to listen!”
- Zola
from Texas

I want to offer a special thanks to Brenda Cooper. Here is her
story: My name is Brenda Cooper, I am 50 years old and I live
in East Texas. I have been fat most of my life. Even in grade
school, I used to get so embarrassed because at report card time we
were weighed so our weight could be put on the card. The nurse never
called out my weight like she did the other kids, she just wrote it
down. I was glad she didn't call it out, but I was still
embarrassed. I did manage to lose enough weight on diet pills when I
was in the 10th grade. I needed to lower my weight to try out for
majorette and I got it. That was a pretty good year.
The next year I got married and pregnant. I gained a lot of
weight during my pregnancy and just kept gaining from there. I have
lost a lot of weight since then. I lost 100 pounds on the no carb
diet, but gained it all back plus some. I
lost 86 pounds at Weight Watchers, gained it all back plus some. I
lost 84 pounds at the Metabolic Weight Loss Clinic and yes, you
guessed it, gained it all back plus some. Following that, I got up
to 320 pounds. Then I got type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure and
high cholesterol. I was a mess.
Then in April 2003 my life changed. I had RNY gastric bypass
surgery. This is not a miracle cure for weight loss, it is only a
tool. And as with all tools, you have to work with them to be
successful. I was very lucky and had no problems what so ever
following my surgery. I lost 150 pounds in a year. In March 2004 I
had plastic surgery to remove some excess skin. I had abdominoplasty
and brachioplasty. I lost 10 more pounds following that bringing my
weight and weight loss to 160 pounds. I actually lost half of me.
Gastric bypass surgery was the best
decision I ever made.
Since then, I have gained back 25 pounds and have to work at not
gaining any more. I feel good at 185
and wear size 12 or 14 clothes. You really have to change your
habits to make this work, but it is so worth it. Remember to eat
your protein first and to get in some form of exercise everyday.
I thank God everyday for giving me the opportunity to have
gastric bypass surgery, to lose weight and to get healthy.
Thank you Barbara for your book and website.
You are one of the main reasons I had
surgery.
